This Side Of Paradise

Over the next four or five weeks, I will be reading F. Scott Fitzgerald's This Side of Paradise. It is a historical fiction novel, set during the aftermath of World War I. The book is about Amory Blaine, and his adolescence. He is a student at Princeton and seems to be intent on rebelling against his background and upbringing. From what i can gather by simply reading the back of the book, Amory's character will go through a lot of development and maturing throughout the course of the novel. I am looking forward to seeing the progressions that his character makes because i find it very interesting to see how people change and adapt based on their current situation. Not only does this help me to learn more about the character, the book, and the author's unique writing style, but I also find that these adaptations are a reflection of how everyone in society changes and reacts to things. Because i don't know much about this time period, this will allow me to learn a lot more about the way people were during the aftermath of World War I.

I think that a lot of this book is going to be Amory trying find love, however on the back it says that he is thrown into the "frightening labyrinth of the real world", so I don't think that search is going to go too well for him at first. Usually books like this conclude with a happy ending, but i find that to be rather common and boring. Not to say that i hope Amory ends the book miserable and alone, but I would like to see some sort of differentiation between this novel, and most other stories about someone trying to find love. The book is 260 pages, so I will be reading about 52 pages a week for five weeks.
